UPDATE: [October, 2005] A local developer has purchased the Virginia Mansion with plans to renovate the structure into four condos. Special congratulations go to the small group of committed urbanists who worked tirelessly to preserve this unique building in the face of strong political opposition. This group still has outstanding legal bills from this fight - donations are accepted through Paypal and directly to their lawyer (information is available on their web site).
UPDATE: The Virginia Mansion is reportedly up for sale. The demolition appeal was lost and with the courts being the only remaining recourse, the owner has decided to sell the building.
The Virginia Mansion is the subject of a battle in the Dutchtown neighborhood. A local charity, based on some bad advice, wants to raze a unique structure and put up a new facility in its place. Though several knowledgeable professionals have testified that the building is still in reparable condition, the existance of architectural drawings for complete renovation, and a dedicated contingent of people willing to volunteer their time to make the renovation possible, the charity continues to fight for its demolition.
